I struggle not to be discouraged by the flaws in my writing. I read some writing advice (read: hundreds of articles), tried to apply it all to my writing, and voila! Hello crippling perfectionism.
With drawing, I'm usually pretty open to experimentation. Try this! Try that! Mess up all over the place. But with writing, I'm frozen by my own expectations.
So I decided to start an Ernest* for my writing, too. Why? Because I want to tell stories. I want to write. And I'm not going to let something like fear of failure stop me.
Lower your expectations. As low as they can possibly go. (And then some more.)
*Ernest is my sketchbook, which my sister cleverly named (because I'm writing in earnest now--or, should I say, writing in Ernest?) Drawing daily has come with an interesting shift in perspective--rather than being hung up over single successes/failures, I focus on my gradual improvement. I want to feel that way about my writing, too.
